Part 2: Tim’s Big Break and the Introduction of Biomechanics to Hockey Training
Tim Turk specializes in teaching shooting and scoring. He has coached for several NHL teams as well as individual players like Connor Bedard, Nazem Kadri, and Nick Foligno.
In part two of our exclusive interview, Tim talks with Snipe Lights about how his career took off to another level just as hockey training was starting to incorporate an understanding of biomechanics.
Snipe Lights is a hockey shooting target system specifically designed with this type of training in mind. Players and coaches can easily implement Tim’s training into repeatable and trackable workouts on this hockey goal shooting target system that is also interactive and fully portable.
Snipe Lights: Was there a moment when you realized that this shooting and scoring coaching was really taking off?
Tim Turk: Yes. There started to be an evolution in the way things were being taught biomechanically. I was teaching shooting at a goalie school at the time, and I called my program Pro Shooters. These players I taught would go back to their coaches with better shots, and the coaches would ask, “Where are you getting your shot from?”
The players would say, “This guy, Tim Turk, is my shooting coach.”
So, their coaches started asking me to come out to their practices and work with the whole team. Once I was working with entire teams to improve their shooting, I realized that it could be a big turning point in my career.
This was also when the goalie training industry was changing quickly because they had developed a puck-shooting machine. So, I wasn’t going to be needed as a shooter anymore since the goalie coach could just load the machine with 50 pucks, sit behind it, and pull the trigger like a gun and hit whichever spots he wanted to work on for that goalie.
Since my job was going to become redundant, I decided to exclusively teach shooting on my own. I opened my own shooting training facility and kept the name Pro Shooters for a few years.
Then I realized that players weren’t training with me because it was called Pro Shooters; they were coming to train with Tim Turk. Everyone knew me by my name, so I started calling it Tim Turk Hockey. Then it became even more popular and elevated the business to another level.
Stay tuned for part 3 of our interview series with Tim Turk as he delves into the psychological side of hockey training and how gamification with hockey shooting targets like Snipe Lights can keep players engaged and speed up their development.
